Currency redesign causing tremendous difficulty to Nigerians, APC Chairman, Governors cries out

The National Chairman of rulling All Progressives Congress(APC) Senator Abdullahi Adamu said that the currency redesign currently being implemented by the central bank of Nigeria is causing tremendous difficulty to Nigerians.

Adamu stated this while addressing the press on the resolution of the meeting he held with the Progressive(APC) Governors in Abuja Sunday.

According to the resolution meeting which was read out by the APC chairman, they call on the federal government to intervene on the issue which he said is causing tremendous difficulty to Nigerians.

They Urge the CBN Governor Emefiele and the Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami to respect the supreme court order of interim injunction and suspend the implementation.

This is coming after one week after President Mohammed Buhari had address the nation and reechoed the CBN stand suspending the use of Old version of the redesigned Naira currencies on February 10, 2023 despite the order of the supreme court order of February 8.

The CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele had during a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps in Abuja on Tuesday February 14 maintained that the February 10 deadline for suspension of the old note remains sacrosanct and there is no going back.

But Buhari in his address said  the old ₦200 note shall be returned and continue to circulate for more 60day until the April 10, 2023 while the ₦500 and ₦1000 suspension remain in effect. He however said only CBN shall continue to accept the deposit of the old naira note in their respective branches until it phases out.

The APC governors have, since the deadline elapsed, being agitating for the suspension of the cash policy implementation but have cautiously refused to directly join issues with President Buhari instead severally accused Emefiele of being the one who is misguiding him into the policy implementation.

The resolution of the meeting as read out by the APC chairman states,

“We note very seriously that the currency redesign is causing tremendous difficulty to Nigerians.

“We urge the Attorney General of the Federation and the Central Bank Governor to respect the supreme court order of interim injunction which is still subsisting.

“The meeting is urging President Buhari to intervene in resolving the issues causing great difficulty to Nigerians.”
