Harmattan: What it is & what to expect

Harmattan is a season to be very cautious about especially if you are asthmatic, allergic kind of person or a stickler.

It is an extremely cold dry season usually experienced in West African between November and the middle of March.

 Harmattan come with a very hash weather conditions resulting from cold-dry and dusty wind, blowing north-east and west off the Sahara desert over west Africa. 

During this time, the humidity drops really low, everything dries up so quickly and the air becomes so dusty. Also, the temperatures drops so low during the mornings/nights and rises very hot in the afternoons causing everything including your skin to dry up so quickly and 

The weather during the harmattan can make you more prone to sickness for so many reasons.


Harmattan wind can be very assaulting to the respiratory system; it attacks the nostrils and  skin causing them to dry up quickly, the flying dust particles in the air results in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases as well as other health problems including irritation of eyes, throat and skin. Harmattan also causes dehydration, dry and cracked lips, and in most cases, dry skin.

In most individuals inhalation of dust may triggers allergic reactions resulting to nasal congestion,sore throat, stuffy nose, runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, cough, facial pressure and pain.

Staying healthy and taking absolute care of yourself this season is very imperative as that will make you escape all the harmattan problems and sicknesses it brings about.
