One of the inevitable consequence of crippling poverty is moral bankruptcy. The poorer you are the less likely you are to maintain any high standard of morality. This may sound cliché — excusing immorality with poverty. Regardless, it still our reality.

You maybe able to hold the fort and stave off the enticements inducing you to lower your moral standards. But the poorer you are the harder it gets. The bigger the problems, the more likely you find that some problems may be bigger than your moral convictions.
This is especially so when the solution to the problem is financial.

This is why many Nigerian families who have been hardline moralist have been wilting increasingly in the heat of Nigeria’s hopeless hardship.

Generally, sustained financial bankruptcy leads to moral bankruptcy. There are exceptions. But I will not digress by explaining these exceptions because it is not relevant.
The Nigerian society do not fall into these exceptions. The more impoverished the country, the less we would be able to afford to be good people. This is our reality and we must deal with as it is.

On an individual level, people must be encouraged to embrace higher moral standards; hold on to their moral principle and refuse to give it up cheaply. But these consistent encouragement is not the solution because the solution is not at the micro-level. No matter how much you encourage people to be morally upright, people will make decision based on the difficulty of dilemma they encounter on a day to day.

Some may prove their morality is made of sterner stuff but unfortunately, many people would find that they cannot afford the morality you have preached. The solution to the moral bankruptcy in Nigeria is macro. A solution that can hit a lot of people at once.

The poverty level in nigeria cannot continue to go on. The rot needs to be stopped.

We need a country that doesn’t make you choose between your morality or surviving on a daily basis. We need a country where the lines between greed and survival as reasons for illegality isn’t blurred
We need a country were you can boldly make plans about your future in the country without people wondering if you are stupid.

2023 is so important for Nigeria. We cannot allow rogues and thieves capture power again. No, not without a fight.
